Can’t Focus on Work? 4 Surefire Ways to Get Back on Track Today

You are often faced with a stretch of time where you can’t focus on work. You feel frustrated, you want to quit, and no matter how hard you try, you simply cannot keep your head in the game. So how do you get out of this rut?

The simplest way you can get out of the headspace you are in is by figuring out what’s wrong in the first place. There is always a reason why you cannot focus on important tasks. Once you understand what is bothering you, you will find it much easier to gravitate to a solution.

So if you can’t focus on work, see if you can find a solution as you read on:

Figure Out What Is Distracting You

The thing that is preventing you from focusing on work tells you a lot about why you can’t focus on work. Are you spending too much time on social media? Thousands of people procrastinate at work by scrolling through their Instagram or reading hundreds of Twitter threads a day. If social media distracts you, you may have a hard time accepting and being happy with what you are doing. Of course, you cannot be satisfied with all the projects you have all the time, so sometimes you just have to power through.

Try going on a social media detox. Keep your phone away from you when you are working, or keep it on silent without vibration, so you do not get distracted by the notifications.

If you are distracted by your coworkers, try to work in a quieter place where there is no noise and no one wants to talk to you.

If you are anxious, and would rather relax, then maybe you just need to take a break. Do some breathing exercises and ground yourself, and you might find it easier to focus on work.

What Would You Rather Be Doing?

Sometimes we can’t focus on work because we would rather be doing something else. This could include sleeping, working on another activity, or just being away from work. So if you have been trying to get your head around the same task all day long, maybe try to figure out where you would rather be instead.

If you can’t think beyond going home and sleeping, you are probably just tired. Try to get a full night’s rest and take a few days off to get your head back in the game.

Maybe you would rather work on something else or want to finish a video game. Sometimes unfinished tasks prevent you from focusing on work, or anything else in the present. So try to finish your videogame or whatever else your mind is wandering off to, and then restart your work.

How Is Your Workplace Treating You?

We underestimate how important it is to have a workplace that caters positively to your mental health. One of the main reasons why a lot of people can’t focus on work is that their workplace is no longer conducive to their mental health. This could be due to hostile coworkers, a micromanaging boss, being underpaid and overworked, or just not being able to find meaning in your work.

So figure out if your workplace is stressing you out more than it should. Maybe it’s time to update your CV and look for a new job. Or you could ask for some changes in your current workplaces to make it better for you mentally. Fun fact: Workplaces are usually willing to accommodate their employees wherever they can.

Are You Focusing On Your Physical Health?

Very often, we have brain fog because we are neglecting our physical health. It prevents us from looking at our tasks objectively and is one of the main reasons why many employees can’t focus on work.

So maybe it’s time to hit the gym again. Take up a sport, if that appeals to you. Even a thirty-minute walk every day is enough physical exercise to help you clear your head and get back on track.

Final Words

The easiest way to figure out why you can’t focus on work is by getting to the root of the problem. Once you’re there, you can work up a solution on your own!
